The Nicholson Furniture Building was constructed in the early 1920s and has been a part of Statesville’s commerce ever since. It has 10,000 square feet.
It initially housed the Nicholson Furniture Company on the first level and professional offices on the second level. Later, it was home to Raylass Department Store, and it currently houses the local Army-Navy Store.
The two-story masonry building includes a mezzanine and a small basement. In the 1960s, the front façade was covered over and the second floor windows were reduced in size. The façade cover has been removed, and the first floor cornice will be repaired. The new owner will be required to reestablish the second story windows to their original material and configuration.
There are many original features still present inside the building including the original tin ceilings and moldings, doors, wood floors, and the mezzanine. There are even some of the original art deco light fixtures throughout the building.
The Nicholson Furniture Building has a freight elevator that is current on N.C. inspections. The first floor could easily be divided into two store fronts as there are two separate front entrances. There is evidence that the building originally had a separate front entrance to access the second level. This entrance could be reestablished to offer a private entrance to the second level. The only access way to the second level is currently from the first level store front. The second level would make nice professional offices, downtown apartments or condos. The first level is currently leased, providing immediate income while the building is being rehabilitated.
