Statesville Cycling Criterion
Friday, August 1, 2008
For the eighth year in a row, downtown streets will come alive with the speed, color and crashes of the Statesville Criterium on Friday, August 1. The races will begin at 6:15 and get faster as the sun starts to set with the feature Pro race highlighting the evening at 8:45.
The Pro event will feature teams such as Jittery Joes, Colavita Olive Oil-Sutter Homes, Priority Health and United Pro Cycling Teams. The professional cyclists will hit the street corners at 40 miles per hour and reach between 40 and 45 miles per hour in the finishing sprint. This is not a sport for the weak-hearted. The course start/finish will be located on West Broad just west of the square. The course route will be a .6 of a mile “L” shape on Broad St, Meeting St, Court St, South Center St, Front St and Cooper St.
Not only is the event thrilling to watch, this is a great opportunity for adults and children alike to learn more about one of the fastest growing sports in America. The best thing about the whole event, it’s FREE to the public. Old Time Concessions will provide entertainment for the kids with their giant inflatable slide, moonwalk, and other festive toys.
In between the races, watch the 2008 BIG WHEEL RACES brought to you by D’Laney’s Sports Bar & Grill. These races will be held in front of D’Laney’s at 114 W. Broad Street and begin at 6:45 pm, 7:45 pm and 8:45 pm. Come out Friday evening with the whole family, grab a little dinner in downtown Statesville, and check out the fast action of the World’s top cyclists.
