Statesville’s Evening Farmers Market celebrates peaches and blueberries on July 29


Peaches and blueberries are favorite summertime fruits that can be enjoyed fresh or cooked into pies, cobblers, jams, preserves or any number of delicious recipes. These fruits are easily frozen for winter use too. Ann Simmons, the Family and Consumer Education Extension Agent at the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service in Statesville, will be handing out samples and recipes of dishes she has made using fresh local peaches and blueberries. Ann will be able to answer questions about using and preserving peaches and blueberries.

Statesville Criterium Bike Race Planned for August 6 in Downtown


For the tenth year in a row, the streets of Downtown Statesville will come alive with the speed, color and crashes of the Statesville Criterium Bike Race being held on Friday, August 6. This event, organized by Charlotte Sports Cycling, is one of several criterium races involved in the Crossroads Classic being held this year in cities across the Piedmont of North Carolina. The races will begin at 6:15 pm and get faster as the sun starts to set with the feature Pro race highlighting the evening at 8:45. In between the races, watch the 2010 Trike Races brought to you by D’Laney’s Sports Bar & Grill. These races will start at the square and end in front of D’Laney’s at 114 W. Broad Street. The trike races will run at 6:45 pm, 7:45 pm and 8:45 pm. We encourage spectators to come out for the night with the whole family, grab dinner in downtown, and check out the fast action of the World’s top cyclists. Inflatable rides for the kids will be provided by DSDC at no charge on East Broad Street. Please mark your calendars for this great downtown event. Who says you can’t compete against the huge national chains? In fact, you can crush ‘em! Discover how big-box stores view competition and the customer & how their weaknesses can become your strengths. With some creativity and desire, you can develop a retail experience that your customers can’t refuse and the chains can’t touch. The “Compete With the Retail Giants” seminar co-sponsored by DSDC is planned for Tuesday, September 14, 2010 from 6:30-9:30 pm. It will be held at the Mitchell Community College Technology & Workforce Development Center, 701 W. Front Street, Room 205. There is no fee to attend but registration is required. Tomatoes and Peppers Featured at July 22 Evening Farmers Market


Statesville’s Evening Farmers Market will feature tomatoes and peppers on Thursday, July 22 from 4:00-6:30 pm. Now is the time to enjoy summer’s best offerings. Tomatoes are at the top of the list of favorite vegetables. Enjoy them fresh, cooked in recipes and preserved for winter. Harry Cogan, grower of heirloom tomatoes, says the tomatoes are fabulous this year. Talk to your grower about ordering a quantity to can or freeze. Peppers are ripening now too and make great additions to tomato dishes. Enjoy the many varieties raw, cooked, stuffed, hot or sweet. Risto’s Place Food & Spirits( formally Mayo’s Restaurant) located across from the market in historic Downtown Statesville will be serving samples of delicious tomato and pepper recipes.

Public Workshop Planned in Statesville for Iredell County Greenways Master Plan


The Iredell County Board of Commissioners, along with the communities of Love Valley, Union Grove, Harmony, Mooresville, Troutman, and Statesville invite you to attend public workshops to provide your input for the Iredell County Greenways Master Plan. The plan will provide a blueprint for a system of hiking, biking, walking, equestrian, and/or water trails that will be Iredell County’s portion of the 15-County Carolina Thread Trail Network. Please attend one of the three workshops around the county. Youth activities are planned so please bring your children! Select a location & time convenient to you. In late June, a public survey will be available by web and hard copy for citizen input along with an interactive website where you can help map and give feedback about trails!

Downtown Statesville Streetscape Update


The City of Statesville has been working on the continued study and implementation of the Downtown & NC 115 Streetscape and Land Use Master Plan over the last three months. Since that time, one change has occurred regarding the phasing of the project.
