The first time I heard of the Statesville Bike Race, I immediately shrugged it off. The only bike I ride is the kind with a banana seat and basket on the front. You won’t see me pedaling for speed or taking a corner nearly lying down, but more likely weaving side to side down the sidewalk with a goofy grin on my face.
I imagine many other people, like me, assume the bike race is meant for people who… well… race bikes. Seems logical. If I am not going to participate, then why would I go? After all, I don’t make a habit of showing up at 5k races that I am not planning to run.
But a 5K foot race does not have the break-neck speed and tight corners at ten bikes wide. They often lack the photo finishes and crazy crashes that the bike race has. After attending my first Statesville Bike Race, I knew I would never miss another one. My night was filled with smiles and laughter, celebrating wins with total strangers, holding my breath as the bikes flew around a 90-degree corner. Add all that excitement to the hilarity of local community and business leaders racing tricycles, the awe of the hot air balloon glow in the breathtaking architecture of historic Downtown Statesville, the kids’ bike races and inflatable fun, and you have yourself a great night of family fun!
Although Statesville has hosted the Friday night Criterium Race for the past 16 years, this year the entire Crossroads Cycling Classic will take place in Statesville over a three-day period! We will still have our annual Friday night Criterium Race, in addition to the First Flight Criterium on Saturday night! Then, on Sunday, the State Championship Road Race will take place in Northern Iredell County.
If you have never ventured out to the bike races before, make this the year you do! You will definitely see me there for every leg of it. I’ll be the one with the goofy grin.
