The Evening Farmers Market of Statesville was started by a group of local farmers who wanted an afternoon market to sell only their locally grown produce, baked good or crafts.
There were four vendors at the first market. The fourth says he sold everything before he was able to unload it from his car and set up. So began the Evening Farmers Market fourteen seasons ago.
Farmers markets were the first “grocery stores”, are still the main source of produce in many foreign countries, and are gaining in numbers and popularity in the USA as people learn that locally grown vegetables are higher in nutrients because they are sold hours after picking, precious fuel is saved in transportation, reduced packaging therefore saving trash from the landfill and locally grown means dollars spent go directly to the grower. Getting to know the farmer you can learn how the produce is grown and recipes for cooking them. Shopping locally benefits all and is truly a beneficial shopping experience.

Come enjoy the opening reception for Les Brown. “While some of my amphibian and reptile figures represent actual species, most are composite and imagined creatures, some salamander-like, some lizard-like and a few snakes thrown in for the brave snake lovers. Likewise, the frogs are largely creations based only in elements of reality. I try to place my creatures in the natural positions they may enjoy in life.”
Steel Magnolias is a story set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, this show has been beloved since its first run. Directed by Kathy Cochran.
Performances will take place at Twisted Oak American Bar & Grill on August 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26 at 7:30 pm and August 20 & 27 at 2 pm.
