“Here’s looking at you, kid.”
“Go ahead, make my day.”
“Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”
When you hear these movie quotes, it’s easy to have a sense of nostalgia. We often think of movies as entertainment—and they are!—but they also have the power to take you to worlds you never knew existed. Sometimes that means learning something new from an important documentary, and sometimes that simply means bringing light and laughter into your day. At the Full Bloom Film Festival next weekend (9/14-9/16), you’ll have the chance to experience all of these things. With 72 films from 13 different countries, we will be showing a wide variety of cultural perspectives and genres.
How does a film festival work? We are showcasing 4 historic venues in Downtown Statesville, where we will be screening independent feature length films, as well as short films, which we’ve compiled into “screening sessions” based on common themes. For example, we have a spotlight on North Carolina-based documentaries, which will show on Friday, September 15 at 12pm at Twisted Oak Bar & Grill. Each venue is walking distance, so just park your car in one of the free public lots and enjoy your time downtown.
What makes these films different, however, is that they are all made by independent filmmakers. This means that they are working with a small budget while creating very unique storylines. You won’t be able to see these films at your local theater. You will, however, have a chance to meet some very talented filmmakers, many of whom are coming to Statesville to do a Q&A after their film. If you want to get an even deeper perspective on filmmaking, come to the Filmmaker Panel at 11:30am on Saturday, September 16 at Festival Central (located at 201 W Broad Street). Want a more relaxed environment? Come to our party “Under the Stars” Friday night at Pecan Park (starting at 8pm).
In addition, we are very excited to be partnering with Downtown Statesville’s Art Crawl this year, during which we will show our FREE kid-friendly screening session on a loop at our new venue, 212 South Center Street. Stop by any time during Art Crawl (5:30-8:00pm) and catch a few films, or watch the whole session!
Ultimately, there are many ways to experience Full Bloom Film Festival. You can buy a VIP Pass and get the full experience, with all access to screenings and exclusive parties. Or, you can simply come to the festival and buy a single screening ticket at the door. Either way, we look forward to seeing you next weekend at the Full Bloom Film Festival!
